MS Security Bulletin Breaks Internet Explorer

Microsoft security update MS06-015 appears to break IE. The newsgroups are peppered with posts complaining that typing a URL without a prefix like http:// into the IE address bar, or dropping down the address bar to select a URL from your history causes IE to hang. Others report problems with Office applications, including an inability to attach files to messages in Outlook.

Removing Security Update KB908531 appears to correct the problem but is of course, not recommended. Stephen Hui from MS (confirmed??) offers a solution that does not require removing the update.

UPDATE: Microsoft plans to re-release the update. From the FAQ section in the original security bulletin:

Microsoft has completed its initial investigation into issues involving old third party software that customers may have experienced after the installation of this security update. On Tuesday, April 25, Microsoft will issue a targeted re-release of the MS06-015 update.
